I’m a lip balm junkie. I have one in every bathroom, my purse, my gym bag and even in my car.>

But I’m picky about my lip balm. I don’t want all the nasty chemicals and preservatives in traditional lip balms. So for years I was buying organic lip balm like Burts Bees and Alba from health food thinking they was my only option. It was costing me a fortune at $2-3 per tube of lip balm.>

I have found a better, cheaper way. I can make organic DIY lip balm like my favorite brands at less than 25 cents a tube vs. $2-3 a tube.>

Easy DIY Organic Lip Balm

Making lip balm is one of the easiest DIY projects I’ve ever taken on. I couldn’t believe how simple it was the first time I did it – yet it’s so flexible.>

Ingredients You’ll Need

You’ll just need four ingredients: coconut oil, sweet almond oil, essential oils and beeswax. Opt for organic ingredients as this will be going on your lips and you don’t want to consume anything that’s got artificial ingredients or preservatives. >

  • Coconut oil and almond oil help to lock in moisture and leave lips soft and soothe skin. You could simplify this recipe and just use coconut oil.
  • Beeswax is the secret ingredient to firm up this lip balm (similar to a commercial lip balm) so it can be used on the go.
  • Essential oils help to nourish skin and provide a nice scent to this recipe. Opt for essential oils that can be use internally – as many out there are not for internal consumption.

Note: Some favorite essential oils to use are lavender, lemon, grapefruit, geranium, or even rose. Just remember that citrus oils like lemon and grapefruit can make the skin photosensitive to the sun (more likely to burn) so avoid those if you plan to be out in the sun.>

Chocolate Peppermint Lip Balm

You can even make a chocolate peppermint lip balm. This is one of my favorite recipes to make during the holidays to gift to friends and family. It’s also a great DIY for kids birthday or a spa night-in with the girls. Make your own luxurious chocolate peppermint lip balm with this same recipe.>

There are a couple of things to change up:>

  • Substitute shea butter for almond oil
  • Use 10 drops Peppermint essential oil
  • Follow the rest of the recipe as is

Where to Buy Lip Balm Containers

You can use these lip balm jars or lip balm containers. I prefer these over lip balm tins, which are usually made from aluminum. >

Applying Lip Balm at Night

Lip balm should be a regular part of your bed time routine because during the night your skin rises in temperature to flush out toxins and product new skin cells. Lip balm will help keep these new skin cells smooth. You also lose moisture in your skin throughout the night.>

Top Tips for This DIY Organic Lip Balm

  • Be sure to weigh out all ingredients for precise measurement. You can use an inexpensive kitchen scale to do the job.
  • Make a simple double boiler without the extra equipment: take a small saucepan and place a rimmed glass bowl over it. No need to buy a special double boiler just for this purpose. Check out the video to see what I use.
  • Medicine syringes like these can easily be found at your local pharmacy and work well for filling the lip balm tubes. Just ask the pharmacy counter and they’ll usually supply free of charge.
  • These lip balms hold up to heat very well but as with all lip balms, keep away from direct heat and sunlight. If keeping one in the car, store lip balm upright so the shape doesn’t get distorted when under heat.
  • Throw three to a bundle of these lip balms into amuslin bagthat makes a lovely gift.
